As many may know the TRCN is still pleading to breed more with the Thai Ridgeback. As a breeding club we do not wish that people will start breeding in an irresponsible way. The choice should be well founded and the consquences considered. In the past few years the TRCN tried to guide this as well as they could. This resulted in making a Code of Ethics for the participants, a breeding committee and puppy mediation. For many the question remained; "what is this Code of Ethics, and what does it has to do with me".
This “Code of Ethics” is a regulation specific for this breed and based on the rules set by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries and those of the Dutch kennelclub "Raad van Beheer". Through these rules we try to let our members breed in a responsible way and try to keep the breed as pure as possible. Members are able to request assistance from the club through means of the breeding committee, puppy mediation and co-breeders to raise a litter and provide the best care for growth and development. It is not easy to buy a beautiful, healthy and well socialized Thai Ridgeback puppy and to raise it. Of course it all starts with the choice of your first dog and making the right choices, followed by the many choices that have to be made to breed responsibly. Keeping a dog costs a lot of money, not to mention the cost for maintaining about 6 puppies (dogs). In addition there will be many demands put forth by yourself, the breeding society, the kennelclub or buyers. Finally there will be the life-time responsibility you will have as a breeder of your puppies towards the buyers. You will have to be able to help them in time of need.
The Thai Ridgeback Club has also requested a list of all Thai Ridgeback's that are registered by the Dutch Kennel Club. After checking this list we have come to the conclusion that many Thai Ridgeback dogs that live in the Netherlands are not registered by the Dutch kennel club. We want to notify you as an owner that your dog should be registered at the Dutch kennel club named "Raad van Beheer" if you are thinking of joining dog-shows, breeding or health research that may occur with this breed. More information about this subject can be found on the “Raad van Beheer”’s website. At this moment you may be thinking that this is not something for you.... But that is what many Thai Ridgeback owners have said before. Registering your pedigree, getting approval of an HD-picture, requesting a kennel name (if you want to), are all things that take a lot of time and money, but are things that should be done before starting to breed with the Thai Ridgeback dog in The Netherlands.
There are still many questions about participating in dog shows. Why should I participate.? It is of course something you should want and enjoy, but who does not want to be approached by people asking all kinds of things about your dog ? During shows you will meet many people that show a genuine interest in your dog and also the breed itself. You have the possibility to give personal information about your own dog, its character, etc. But this is just the tip of the ice-berg. It is also good for the breed itself and maybe for your puppies too one day! If you win titels at several shows then your dogs titels will be shown on the pedigrees of your puppies. You can present this to promote your male as a stud or your female as a breeding bitch. It is of course always important to handle your dog well both inside and outside the ring towards other dogs and people. In the ring your dog should be "nice" to the judge and the judge must be able to touch your dog. Showing teeth is something you are allowed to do yourself. If you are planning to try and win some titels with your dog you are not allowed to win too many in one year. More information regarding these regulations can be found on the Dutch kennel club website.
We request everybody with a Thai Ridgeback dog to please consider and try breeding. This will help us to obtain recognition and put The Netherlands on the map for Thai Ridgeback puppies, shows etc. Start making or preparing plans early. Many of you have only a short year left to plan these things and to gather information. Please do this and breed with this dog in the right and responsible way. Try to think of who you want to sell your puppies too, and what you expect to see from a breeder when you would want to buy a puppy. What do you think is important for a breeder and its dogs(s) or a buyer of a Thai Ridgeback dog.
